The Story
The homeowners wanted to leave city life behind and raise their family in the country. They came to McComsey to build a brand-new home on 15 acres that looked like a centuries-old stone farmhouse from the outside and ran like a fully modern smart home from the inside.
Before
The homeowners weren’t trying to fix an old house, they were starting from raw land to build the home and farm life they’d been picturing for years. Here’s what they were leaving behind and what they wanted to create instead:
Design
Archer Buchanan Architects designed the home to look like an old stone farmhouse, with a modern kitchen and mudroom linked to a three-car garage and animal barn. From the architect’s plans, our team worked through every detail of construction, from the eight-inch field stone walls to the smart home automation that runs through the entire house.
The Details
Built above the three-car garage, a full apartment adds flexible living space for long-term guests, in-laws, or older kids down the road.
A wood-burning fireplace built into the heart of the home opens to two rooms at once, anchoring the main living space and giving the family two sides of a real fire to gather around.
A working barn at the back of the property gives the family room to keep animals, with the storage and chore space of a real farm.
A gunite pool, outdoor kitchen, and covered patio sit just off the main house, giving the family a year-round space to host friends, cook outside, and spend time together.
Lights, music, and temperature throughout the house can be controlled from a single app, with motion-activated lighting that turns on and off without a touch.
A fully modern kitchen layout sitting inside walls that look like they've stood for generations.

The result
The homeowners now have a 15-acre farm with all the modern systems of a new build and the character of a home that looks like it’s stood for over a century.
