The Story
The homeowners moved out of Philadelphia looking for safety, a yard, and a home where the grandmother could live with them and help raise the kids. They came to us through Archer Buchanan Architects to turn an outdated, mold-infested ranch home into a modern family house that could hold three generations under one roof.
Before
Design
The homeowners brought in Archer Buchanan Architects to help shape what their next home should be. McComsey worked alongside the architect to make the plan match the budget, building a second story, expanding the garage to three cars, and waterproofing the basement to create a permanent suite for the grandmother.
The Details
An expanded covered front porch and new roof dormers gave the home a curb appeal that matches the updated renovation inside.
The second floor was added over part of the original footprint, leaving the main living and dining areas open to the roof.
White-stained white oak floors, open ceilings, and a sculptural stair railing turn the rebuilt interior into a bright, modern space that doesn’t look like a ranch home anymore.
The original garage was expanded into a three-car garage, with room for vehicles, storage, and the gear that comes with raising young kids.
The entire foundation was waterproofed during construction, eliminating the moisture issues that had compromised the original home.
The waterproofed, climate-controlled basement was finished into a permanent suite for the grandmother.
Geothermal HVAC keeps heating and cooling costs low through every season.
A new painted fireplace anchors the main living area as a clean, modern centerpiece.
The result
The homeowners now have what they couldn’t find on the Philadelphia market: a safe neighborhood, a yard for the kids, and a home with room for the grandmother to live alongside them. The ranch they started with is barely recognizable, replaced by a modern multi-generational family home in Chadds Ford.
