Recent work

Featured Work Collaborations

Two recent projects built alongside architects we partner with often.

Red barn with a stone-walled lower section, black-framed doors, and a metal roof on a manicured lawn under a bright blue sky.

Archer Buchanan Architects | Bragg Hill Stone House Renovation

A 2.5-year transformation of a Civil War-era stone house in West Chester into a dance hall and owner’s suite, designed by Archer Buchanan. We underpinned the existing stone foundation, integrated steel framing behind reclaimed 8-inch stone veneer found buried from the original barn, and rebuilt a collapsed stone gable mid-project.

The original walk-in fireplace and oven came back to life. The interior and exterior stonework was pointed to expose the true stone walls. Two and a half years of stone, steel, and historical preservation, executed against Archer Buchanan’s drawings.

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. McComsey held our spec through every detail of a difficult historic build — exactly what a 2.5-year renovation needs."

Aerial view of a large blue-gray house with a circular driveway, manicured lawn, and trees, with a lake in the background.

Mark Myers Architect | 9,000 sq ft Custom Home on the Elk River

A 16-month custom home built in Earleville, Maryland, designed by Mark Myers Architect. Nine thousand square feet across 8 bedrooms and 7.5 baths, sized for multigenerational family gatherings on the Elk River. This home features hand-nailed hardwood floors, custom built-ins from our shop, an outdoor covered kitchen and sitting area, a wine cellar, a movie theatre, a recreation room, a pool and changing area, and a detached garage. Built the way it was drawn.

Our Approach

Forty years of building alongside architects

McComsey Builders has spent forty years building alongside architects across Chester County and beyond. Our longest-running partnerships have been with firms whose work we’ve executed across multiple homes — Archer Buchanan Architects on six projects to date, Mark Myers Architect on a 9,000-square-foot custom home on the Elk River, and others.

We follow your drawings on the site, exactly as drawn. We flag plan issues before they become problems for you or for your client. We execute the custom millwork, cabinetry, and built-ins out of our own shop, where we can hold the spec instead of handing it off. The relationship is built on staying coordinated with your design through construction, and keeping the client confident in both of us along the way.

Partnership Benefits

What it means to build with us

Four things our architect partners tell us they didn’t realize how much they valued, until they worked with a builder who didn’t deliver them.

01 · On-site fidelity

We protect your design intent on site.

What you draw is what gets built. We don’t substitute materials, simplify details, or value-engineer your specs without your sign-off. The drawings stay the source of truth from groundbreaking through the punch list.

02 · Pre-construction review

We catch plan issues before they become problems.

Our pre-construction review catches zoning, permitting, and constructability questions before framing starts. On one recent project, we caught a missing PennDOT driveway permit on a state highway during plan review — something the client’s own civil engineer had missed. Better to handle it on day one than month four.

03 · In-house millwork

We build the custom details in-house.

Cabinetry, millwork, built-ins, and trim work, all built in our own shop. The specs you draw don’t get watered down by a third-party cabinet maker who’s never seen the rest of the house.

04 · Client communication

We handle the day-to-day client communication.

You designed the project. You shouldn’t have to mediate every selection, schedule slip, and budget question. Every client gets a JobTread login with daily field reports, photos, the live budget, and a direct line to our team. We absorb the operational communication so you can stay focused on the design.

How we work together

A three-step process from your drawings to a finished project

Three phases. Clear roles. The architect holds the design, we hold the build, and the client never has to translate between us.

01

Pre-construction

Plan review & trade coordination.

You hand off drawings. We review them for code, constructability, and field details that need clarifying. We bring in our trade partners — civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing — and develop a detailed line-item budget. Anything to discuss, we surface before contract signing.

02

Construction

Built true to your drawings.

We build the project true to your drawings. Substitutions and field changes route through you. Custom millwork and cabinetry come out of our shop, sized and detailed to your specs. The client gets daily updates through JobTread; you get the calls that matter.

03

Walk-through & closeout

Punch list, handover, and what comes after.

You’re invited to walk the project at major milestones and the final. We close out the punch list with your input where it matters. The relationship doesn’t end at the certificate of occupancy — most of our architect partners come back for the next project, and the one after that.

Our philosophy

Your drawings hold the design. Our job is to build it the way you drew it.

The shortest version of why we work the way we do: a builder who bends the design to make construction easier eventually becomes a problem for the architect. A builder who follows the drawings and surfaces issues honestly becomes a partner. We’ve spent forty years on the second side of that line.

01

We follow your drawings.

Field substitutions always go through you first.

02

Forty years of field knowledge.

Local trades, township code, what a permit office will and won’t approve.

03

Construction-side communication.

JobTread daily reports, weekly walk-throughs. Your client knows what’s happening every week.

04

In for the long haul.

Most of our architect partners are repeat partners — because we built well together once.
